The name is derived from the ‘black berries’ and the town of Avola in Syracuse.
Nero d’Avola was brought to the island several centuries ago by Greek colonists; it subsequently adapted perfectly to this new environment and became the most famous and important black grape variety in Sicily.
Until the first half of the 20th century, Nero d’Avola was used almost exclusively in blended wines. In recent decades, Sicilian winemakers have begun producing this single-varietal wine with truly outstanding results.
